34 Presidio Terrace was once the home of former San Francisco Mayor Joe Alioto, serving as the unofficial mayor’s mansion of San Francisco in the 1970’s and 80’s. And as plugged-in people know, it was bombed during a union strike in 1975.

Purchased for $9,500,000 in early 2008 having been listed for $10,400,000 at the time and on and off the MLS for years, the 8,040 square foot Presidio Terrace mansion has just returned to the market asking $8,980,000.

While still rather exclusive, thankfully the gated Presidio Terrace enclave isn’t nearly as “exclusive” as it was in 1915 when first developed and advertised as the only “spot in San Francisco where only Caucasians are permitted to buy or lease real estate or where they may reside.” And where buyers had to agree to only sell to other white people as well.

With respect to the home, don’t miss the playrooms below:

  1. The Fairmont Area of Pacifica still has in the original deed restrictions of only selling to white people. Crazy.
And to think that was in the early to mid 1950’s when Fairmont was built.

Most people that spend a lot of time outside move to Marin, the East Bay or the Peninsula. I bet I have friends that have not “used” their little yards in SF in years…
P.S. I bet most the people in Presidio Terrace voted for Senator Phelan in 1920 who ran with the slogan “Keep California White”

P.P.S. I heard that DiFi gave her Presidio Terrace home to her daughter after her and her husband bought George Lucas’ place off the Lyon Street stairs. Anyone have any idea if Katherine (who may be our next Senator since she has such good name recognition) still lives there?

  3. This is practically in the Presidio so I don’t think access to outdoor space is a major concern. I’m sure everybody on Presidio Ter has exactly the amount patio and outdoor kitchen they desire despite not being on 3-acre lots. Besides, this is in fog country.

  4. The sellers heavily renovated the place from when they bought it 5 years ago. Good that they got the same price back as what they bought it for, but I’m guessing they put about 500k in renovations into the place. Throw in property taxes and realtor fees and it’s a hefty chunk of change.
