1127 Bowdoin
The first floor of 1127 Bowdoin was built in 1952, the second added in 1984. In 1987 the kitchen was remodeled with maple counters around a classic Wedgewood stove and doesn’t look dated in the least (unlike a lot of the newer construction about town).

A work studio sporting “built-in cabinetry, gas heat, and track lighting” was built out back in 1977 and is reached by way of redwood decks.

And while there’s no parking and you can debate the price ($649,000), it’s a little (re)treat as far as we’re concerned.

  1. okay, I don’t usually comment on particular properties because I don’t even pretend to know about color palettes, maintenance of exterior Ipe, kitchen work triangles, and similar issues. besides that, I simply couldn’t afford 98% of the properties discussed on here. however, this I like, and — if it sells near asking — could reasonably imagine affording.
i guess i’m just old-fashioned, because to me it simply looks comfortable. a relaxed (not showy) use of wood throughout, a full bath with classic elegance, and not a hint of needing a Jackson Pollock painting to complete the decor. the kind of place i would want for hosting family holiday dinners (as opposed to trendy dinner parties).
yeah, the location is a bit rough around the edges; i probably wouldn’t want to be trying to catch public transit to downtown from here (is there a Caltrain stop nearby?), but it definitely isn’t Albion Castle either.

  2. I couldn’t agree more.
this place makes me think of Armistad Maupin’s Barbary Lane. quintessential 1970’s SF.
    makes me homesick.
    more please!

  3. It’s a cool little house, although it’d be better if the master bedroom had a full bath. The lot is an odd shape, perhaps because of a neighboring structure. It’s not as much of a “secret retreat” as it looks because it backs up to Burton High, but I do like it and find it better stylistically than several places we see around here. I agree with our editor that it doesn’t feel dated.

Yeah, it’s the Portola, not Bayview. Bayshore Caltrain Station isn’t that far off, but Caltrain’s latest plan is to close Bayshore station, so you’re out of luck on that one.

  4. Amen, ex-sfer. That kitchen (and relative affordability) are what I thought it might be like here when I first arrived in 1989. Then, Things Changed.

  5. Actually, when I was a little girl, a little cottage with that kitchen and the garden and the wood trim and lots of bookcases is what I thought I would have when I grew up. And what still think I might have someday when I’m retired and moved out of the city. 😉

  6. Seems like a nice place and I’m happy to learn that it’s a high school that this abuts (I couldn’t tell for sure). My understanding is that this part of the Portola isn’t too bad.
But, the most interesting thing here is to see the comments that people make. Feel that I’ve gained an insight into socket site readers’ psychology.

  7. Love it. Many of the properties on socketsite feel pretentious to me, like they are trying to impress or trying to be something they really aren’t. This feels like a warm bowl of homemade soup on a cold winter’s day 🙂

  8. I sure hope thieves don’t poach these sites for goodies. That backyard retreat office near mansell is ripe for the pickings.

  9. This to me seems the quintisenntial SF Cottage. Small yet functional and pretty without being ostentatious. Twice the size, half the price of the shack @ 86 Stanton… And this one actaully does have that “secret garden” appeal. I would by this place in a heartbeat… (and a raise)
