857 Hayes
The photography probably won’t win any awards and the layout or stairs are certain to be off-putting to some. But the listing for 857 Hayes Street made us stop and sucked us in.
And it wasn’t what looks to be a respectful remodel and restoration of the grand scale Victorian nor the dollars per square foot (four hundred and seventy-five) which did the trick. It was simply that porch off the kitchen which any entertainer would adore.
∙ Listing: 857 Hayes (4/2) – $949,000 [MLS]

  1. No word if it’s an apple? Last sold 12/2004 for 775K.

A few houses down, on the same block, 895 Hayes also caught my eye. A top floor 3/2.5, “NEW CONSTRUCTION! Panoramic views of Downtown & South Bay” selling for $473 psf.

[Editor’s Note: There’s a word, and it’s no (new bath, remodeled bath, remodeled kitchen, etc.).]

  2. Are those bell jars on the dining room table? Talk about a faithful restoration! What a perfect environment to continue my experiments on the luminiferous aether.

  3. I like this place. 2000 sqf. Lots of rooms. 12 foot ceilings. Details. What’s the catch? The prison shower? How do we feel about the neighborhood?

  4. I lived on that block. It’s near some sketchy public housing that sits in between you and the main Hayes Valley strip. Lots of car break-ins, too. It’s not “ghetto” but close enough to the “ghetto” to warrant thought.

  5. I love Hayes valley – I’m at Absinthe and Suppenkuche all the time. But this is too close to the projects. Great place, sh*t location.

  6. This is beautiful looking. I do love that open porch from the kitchen too. Fun! I used to live in a Victorian like this and do miss it! Is this kind of layout called a sidecar, train car, straight bullet or something? I forget the nickname.
[Editor’s Note: You’re probably thinking of a “Railroad” layout which is close but wouldn’t have a hallway running alongside the rooms.]

  7. lookielew and Editor,
Editor appears to be using the term in the same style as the New York Times (see item 3, and other articles they publish), whereas lookielew is using the terminology as stated by Wikipedia. I have heard the term used in SF (by architects no less) in the Wikipedia standard.
(What Editor is calling Railroad, Wikipedia calls ‘Shotgun’)

  8. The sale of 857 Hayes Street closed escrow today with a reported contract price of $960,000. Don’t forget our invitations to the housewarming on that porch.
