A Little Faux Bois (And Alliteration) On This Fine Friday Afternoon [SocketSite]

  1. This house is in my neighborhood, and it is just one example of how disgusting this housing frenzy had become. The renovation is so ill-conceived, that it is difficult to know where to begin. For anyone visiting this house, I would encourage him or her to concentrate on the myriad floor finishes when walking around the house. Guaranteed to induce vertigo (if the price hasn’t already).
That being said, the house has clearly been renovated to an Asian taste, and I expect it to sell, although probably not at $3.8 million.
In this late stage of frenzy, flippers have clearly bit off more than they could chew (I think this house sold unrenovated a year or so ago for around $2M – and the renovation was VERY costly). Same thing for 135 Fernwood, which was featured here a few months back. Bought for $3MM in late 2005, held for at least a year and a half, expensive renovation that added square footage in the lower level, and couldn’t be sold this summer (offers came in around $3.5 million I understand). Now it’s on Craigslist for rent at #13.5K/month. Good luck with that!

  2. The details appear to clash pretty severely with classic St. Francis Wood style. Something similar with some understatement might have worked better. This place looks more like it belongs in the Sunset with a price tag closer to 2 million and possibly even under. Perhaps that makes it shabby chic and I’m just not tuning into the vibe?

  3. that looks like it belongs in upper rockridge, not st francis woods. what happened? i thought they had an hoa over there to prevent stuff like this?

  4. I have to say that I must disagree with Satchel – thought the house was quite nice – no problem with the floors. I do think the price is too high, however, as far as the dwelling itself, and the overall feel, it’s quite nice. There are plenty of properties in St. Francis Wood that could us sprucing up. To each his own!

  5. The St. Francis Gambit, if I’m not mistaken. Traditionally, one would then develop the coffee table by fianchettoing it to the hallway ceiling.

  6. I’m going to commit sacrilege and say I like it. Overpriced, yes, but somehow interesting. Love the EIK with all the light and openness. I must be losing it…
emmett – I cracked up at your comment. but I even like chessboard room, too! I must REALLY be losing it!

  7. I actually really like this house. It is interesting and has nice light and finishes.
People in SF are such neighborhood snobs with no imagination–only gripes.

  8. I had to look up EIK! I thought the kitchen looked like a super-sized Eichler, so for some reason when I read ‘EIK’ I assumed a secret Eichler culty acronym of some sort!
