“The Hearst Corp. is quietly seeking a developer for 3.9 acres of prime property in the fast-changing Mid-Market neighborhood, 20 separate parcels that include the current home of Hearst’s San Francisco Chronicle at Fifth and Mission streets.”
“Hearst owns most of the land from Mission Street south to Howard Street between Fifth Street and Mary alley. In addition to the Chronicle’s current headquarters, the portfolio covers five parcels along Fifth Street, including 110 Fifth St., the former San Francisco Examiner building that is connected to 901 Mission St. by a bridge over Minna alley.
The Hearst holdings also take in properties along the 900 block of both Mission and Howard streets, as well as a dozen small lots along Minna and Natoma alleys. There are a number of surface parking lots, as well as at least one historic building, a brick former label printer at 447-449 Minna.”

  1. After they sell it all off, they can finally move the whole operation to Orinda. Then, they can rename the paper the the Orinda Chronicle. The suburbanization of the paper will then be complete.

  2. Given the location of the properties, it would be great if an expansion of the Moscone Center could be part of the redevelopment. Perhaps the City could exchange increased density for the additional convention space.

  3. With this 3.9 acres possibly in play there are almost enough pockets of development between MOMA on 3rd and the proposed Trinity building to really change this area. There are certainly still rough pockets but it would be interesting to see a plan view of midmarket with everying that has been built or renovated in the last 10-15 years.

  4. this represents a real opportunity for the city to develop affordable infill housing in a transit centric location. Thus, the City will find a way to screw it up badly.

  5. A wonderful opportunity to finally develop this area into its highest and best use, and change the landscape of SF. But, enough million dollar hi-rise real estate porn condos already. Put in some decent and practical housing ie. 2-3 bdrms for $500K and you’ll get a more stable environment.

  6. Fascinating, and really great way for SF to fulfill its ABAG requirements over the next 10 years. (I second the request for more affordable units as well.)

  7. Pardon my chuckle, but is it just coincidence that 5th/Mission is “Hey, great spot for affordable units!” when elsewhere the mere idea of BMR elicits a groan?
Apropos to that, I don’t think Moscone wants to expand anywhere next as much as they’d like to ace the Filipino retirement home on the remaining quadrant at 4th/Howard. Two blocks away on the far side of 5th/Miss you’re rocking the fringe between Metreon and 6th, and…well…it’d be a lot to ask of convention people.
